Ogunquit ME

Tim Tower, March 25, 2020

Last night the Ogunquit Board of Selectmen (and women) voted to close most of the public parking lots in Ogunquit as well as the beaches and the Marginal Way.  This morning I was asked to close our parking lots to the public by our police department. I, of course, will honor the request of the Ogunquit Police Department; they have been very very helpful to us over the years and I have a very good working relationship with them.

In a statement to the public yesterday, Governor Janet Mills closed all non-essential businesses in the state of Maine. And she requested that people self-quarantine as much as they can and follow all the health related safety practices that have come about since the Covid-19 crisis. They include no groups of people larger than ten, washing your hands frequently and staying at least six feet away from other people. Those three items are the three items high on the list. I won’t fine tune this anymore. I’m sure you have read enough about it from every media outlet available.

Suffice it to say, the country and the state, in particular, are in some form of a lock down. As a result, we have had to delay our opening. At this time, we do not know when we will be able to open.  Regulations and the course of the disease changes on an hourly basis, it seems.  When we do open, my biggest concern will be consumer confidence. Will we have enough business at Barnacle Billy’s to make this a viable option financially? Will our patrons feel comfortable being here?  Will it dramatically change the way we do business? I certainly don’t want to do anything that will compromise someone’s life or enjoyment.

So these are new times. We have less crew here getting both restaurants ready, we have changed the way we interact with each other and we have adjusted the routine with which we accomplish our goals while setting up.  No one wants to get sick. And I can’t afford to have our top people, the lifeblood of operation, hurt in any way. So we wait, patiently, for things to get better. But we are also moving forward getting the restaurants ready to open and keeping our supply vendors appraised at every state of our progress.

I would suggest that you not drive up here to Ogunquit at this time.  Stay updated so that you know when current regulations have relaxed. And know that the beach, the Marginal Way and Ogunquit is safe. It’s just that the town had to do something to curtail the large numbers of people showing up on the weekends who were not practicing proper sanitary procedures.

Updates will be posted on this website and Facebook on a regular basis. And you can always call us at 207-646-5575 or email us at barnbilly@gmail.com. Thank you and stay well.
